Version Update History
Changes and Fixes in Version 3.0.1
- An issue wherein your cursor would be unavailable after a certain point in the transcript has been addressed
- Reverted behavior of auto-punctuation to pre-3.0 behavior, does not add auto-punctuation on lines that end in a Hard space, Tilde, Close paren or double-quotes
- A issue wherein if you deleted more paragraphs than would be left after the deleted section, the following paragraphs would all be merged into a single paragraph, was fixed.
- Replacing with a punctuation token will no longer delete following paragraph breaks
- Fixed a issue wherein if you included a file not at the beginning of a paragraph, the included sections would have the paragraph styles off by one paragraph.
- The style sheet now properly saves the lines per page and applies them to the job on creation/application
- Autosave now saves to a secondary file, and saving makes sure that it completes without error before replacing the old version of the file.
- Null (Empty) translations will no longer be ignored by subsequent translations (So a naked <U> token will work properly, for example)
- A issue wherein Caseview output would become broken up around page breaks was fixed.
- Including a job by way of a <GET> token now refreshes the job window preventing the display of garbage characters (revert to pre-3.0 behavior)
Changes and Fixes in Version 3.0
- SmartCAT now includes user created conflicts and cursor stops!
- The addition of an audio record meter now allows the reporter to view, in real time, the volume of audio being recorded in SmartCAT.
- SmartCAT now keeps the line your cursor is positioned on centered on the screen for editing ease.
- *If* SmartCAT crashes during realtime, rather then displaying a fatal error, the program will restart, recover the crashed job and open it.
- Scan-to-Next ('n') now stops on phoneticized untranslates, so the transcript no longer needs to be retranned, and a 'Dephoneticize Transcript' option has been added to the Tools menu; so, if you prefer, phoneticized untranslates can be converted into traditional bracketed untranslates.
- Number formatting, both by using the # bar or through translation, recognizes words like "thirty two" as numbers as well as actual digits.
The number formatting engine has also been revamped so that number triggers now work and so it is much more consistent in its execution.
- The job menu is much faster on successive loads of the same work directory.
- All Globals and Replaces are faster.
- The user can now include portions of a job by selecting a range of either lines or pages; bookmarks and/or index entries are now an option to be included, alongside the previously existing steno notes; multi line headers are now included with their specific pages; and many of the issues with including jobs have been resolved resulting in a much more stable system.
- '.' in a dictionary entry now translates as a simple period (e.g.
a.m. or p.m.), while the <.> token causes the following word to be capped.
- The <SPELL> token no longer creates a word break. So, in a definition like "<SPELL-><S:H>", you no longer get a space from the previous letter.
- SmartCAT can now import Mira steno files (*.sgstn) through the import notes option.
- Added the option to ignore the number bar in all strokes.
- Control-K (toggle capping) now also works in the Steno Global, Text Global and Replace dialog boxes.
- In the index setup up options there is now a field allowing the reporter to place a column header for the 'text of entry'. e.g. if the 'text' of entry' contains a brief description of the exhibits, it can be labeled as such using this field and will appear in the transcript after 'Build Indicies'.
- Functions such as Cap Toggle (ctrl-k), Text Global ('t') and Spellcheck (alt-F9) will now operate on the current word, regardless of whether it's highlighted or the cursor is positioned in the middle of the word.
- <SPKID> tokens will now work in headers and index entries.
- Deleting a word with 'd' will now merge spaces properly, not delete the following punctuation, delete to the end of a word if the cursor is in the middle of the word, delete *only* selected text when things are selected, delete whole words when a whole word is highlighted and/or your cursor is at the beginning of the word and generally behave just like TurboCAT did.
- By placing the cursor at the beginning of a section of text to be selected, entering select mode and then using the find function (ctrl-f) to search for the first word of the following section, SmartCAT will now select the intervening content.
- Hotkeys now do not execute until the Alt + Control/Shift keys are released. This results in a smoother and less awkward hotkey execution.
- Undo ('z') has been extended from 15 to 50 steps giving the user more flexibility while editing.
- You can now rename your jobs directly from the job menu!
- Splitting Paragraphs (y and ctrl-y) will now properly insert closing and/or opening parens on parenthetical paragraphs.
- The <NULL> token now turns off stiching and only generates a space if it does not already follow one.
- The concordance generation engine has been changed so that words with upper case and lower case (e.g. Him and him) both appear as the same entry in the concordance.
- Replace and Global functions now properly remove trailing spaces when appropriate.
- In the dictionary editor, entries with the number bar now appear in lower case fixing the issue where a stroke such as 1r# will actually translate (the steno definition is no longer forced to 1R#).
- SmartCAT exits select mode after replacing.
- The init cap command now works properly on all capitalized text.
- Moving to text with no associated notes will leave the cursor on the last highlighted note, rather then jumping to the beginning.
- The font in the steno global window has been enlarged for readability.
- The </> token now translates to a slash with no spaces on either side, as if it were ~/~.
- Home, End, PgUp, PgDn, Ctrl+PgUp and Ctrl+PgDn will now navigate the Job Menu as expected.
- Select mode (s or Ctrl-S) always moves word to word regardless of the 'arrows move word to word' setting in Editing Prefs.
- Quote-type turbokeys such as ", [], {}, () or <>, unselect and highlight the first word of the selected text to mimic TC behavior.
- Init Cap (Ctrl-F5) will now properly init cap words with apostrophes in them, and will init cap the whole word if your cursor is in the middle of the word.
- Elapsed time has been added to RTF export for audio sync.
- The help button in Spelling Options now takes you to the correct help topic.
- The Steno Emulator has been updated to 3.0 compatibility.
- Doing a replace or replace all will cause the following text to capitalize if it's appropriate.
- Right clicking past the end of the document moves the cursor to the end rather than the beginning.
- Some of the menu options have been renamed, repositioned or otherwise attended to.
- Period and question mark tokens now adds two spaces and cap the following word when they are followed by quotes (<.">).
- In addition to letters, entries in a concordance may now start with numbers or a period.
- A concordance now has vertical lines separating the the columns.
- The range of possible lines per page has been increased to down to 10 and up to 50.
- The spellchecker now catches double words regardless of case.
- The spell-checker now takes care of extra spaces, capping and punctuation when dealing with double words.
- Parenthetical paragraphs no longer insert extra spaces before or after the parentheses during translation.
- Tagging changes were made to exported RTFs allowing for better transferability between CAT systems.
- SmartCAT now colors a global/resolved untranslate as indicated in the color options.
- When running pre-edit, SmartCAT will stop on phonetic untranslates.
- The bug where identical index entries would appear out of sequence when 'No Sorting' is selected in Index Setup has been fixed.
- The Text global dialog now responds to Ctrl+K (for capping). The dialog will either toggle capitalization on the entire selection or the word the cursor is currently on (if no text is selected).
- Cursor behavior in the Text global dialog now mimics TurboCAT behavior. When you first go into the dialog the entire text is selected and when you hit [Enter] the text will become unselected and the cursor will go to the end.
- The Edit Hotkey dialog now has a button to insert an '®' for ease of hotkey creation.
- Canceling out of the Speaker ID edit box no longer makes any changes in the transcript.
- Restarting an interrupted realtime job on a Stentura will have it dump from where it left off instead of the beginning of the job.
- The Job menu is now zoomable just like transcripts.
- Translation is much faster. During translation, rather then displaying translation statistics, SmartCAT displays the % complete, total number of translated notes and total number of notes.
- Following a replace, a window pops up displaying the number of replacements and indicating it is complete.
- Undo (ctrl-z) immediately after a global now reverses said global.
- "Print Hearers on Line 1" checkbox now properly impacts the status bar and index line entries.
- Performing a global now takes SmartCAT out of select mode to mimic TurboCAT behavior.
- The Color preferences window under Editing preferences was rearranged for clarity and readability. A 'as normal background color'
check box was also added to easily set the background text color of each text type to match the body of the transcript. Also, when the notes window is focused anything with the 'as normal background color' checked inverts correctly.
- "Translate in all caps" has been replaced with "Display and Print in all caps" which switches the *display* to ALL CAPS without actually altering the file. This allows SmartCAT to display, edit and/or print in ALL CAPS with fewer issues.
- The Theory settings have been moved to another dialog. There's now one dialog for all translation theory settings and translation options.
This dialog is accessible from the 'Tools' menu, the Realtime Settings box, the Job Properties or the Style Sheet itself.
- Switched the '-' command around so that '-' always stitches/unstitches while in highlight mode and always hyphenates/unhyphenates while in select mode (so -s- always works as
intended) to better resemble TurboCat behavior.
- Checking the 'Number Bar for Numbers' option in 'Theory Settings/Translation Options' no longer conflicts with dictionaries.
- Checking the options '* for deletion', 'Mult * for multiple strokes' and '*/* for new para' in various combinations all work as expected.
- Connection problems during realtime no longer causes SmartCAT to crash or stop realtime. Rather, SmartCAT will display an "ERR" message in the status bar while realtime is re-established.
- Several bugs when importing a TurboCAT transcript have been resolved. All the following items import properly: tabs, page breaks, empty paragraphs at the beginning of a job, chars/per line, lines/page, and text formatting attributes. The following have been added to
importing: "PN" control lines and the page number attribute associated with a "P" control line. And finally, the problem where global undo information caused extra characters to appear, has been resolved.
- Added a 'Hop Backwards' ('ctrl-shft-h') to correspond with 'Hop Forwards' ('ctrl-h').
- Added a 'Find Previous' ('ctrl-shft-l' or 'shft-l') to correspond with 'Find Next' ('ctrl-l' or 'l').
- Added 'Delete Number Bar' when right clicking steno allowing you to see the steno with no number bar.
- SmartCAT now gives the option to delete entries marked for deletion in a dictionary when saving.
- The '#' symbol, indicating a number bar stroke, now shows on the right-hand-side of the steno and the characters show up in their proper column, just like non-number bar strokes (to accurately replicate paper steno).
- Multiple consecutive indexes (with no intervening paragraphs) will no longer fail to rebuild on subsequent builds.
- When building an index, the cursor is left at the top of the index rather then the top of the file.
- Files created or opened in SmartCAT 3.0 now have a version number embedded in the file allowing versions of SmartCAT newer then 3.0 to detect if the file was created in a newer or older version as well as prohibits versions of SmartCAT older then 3.0 to open newer files at all. As we make updates and add features to SmartCAT, the structure of a job changes. This addition protects your job from potential incompatibilities or corruption.
- When SmartCAT creates a bookmark or index entry, the selected text is what is actually highlighted with the bookmark or index entry color.
- Hitting Tab at the beginning of a line or paragraph will insert spaces rather than changing the paragraph's indent.
- When you select text and use comma, your cursor will end up at the beginning of what you'd selected (like TurboCAT).
- Replace window disappears if "Replace All" is chosen.
- The concordance now excludes everything on its exclude list properly.
- Conflicts are smarter about capitalization, both in the conflict itself and when punctuation in the resolution affects other text. The capping is figured when the conflict is actually resolved.
- Replace/Replace All will cap words at the beginning of sentences.
- Copy/Paste will now properly paste paragraph and page breaks outside of SmartCAT.
- Spellcheck with Control-M will include the word which your cursor is on even if it's not highlighted or selected.
- Cleaned up a bug which could cause SmartCAT to crash when adding a dictionary entry in the dictionary editor.
- You can press 'F10' from the Main Menu to exit the program, and you can press 'F1' to launch the Help from the Main Menu.
- Launching the Help or the Work Directory from the Main Menu no longer generates the "This will launch a program outside of smartcat"
warning.
- Multi-Line pickists may have text inserted through insert mode rather than only by way of typeover mode.
- The option "Page Number Format..", on the Edit menu, has been renamed to "Renumber Pages..." and the associated dialog box has been updated.
- So long as SmartCAT is not in select mode, paste (v or ctrl-v) inserts rather then replaces text.
- Phonetic Untranslates count in the translation statistics.
- Space will now replace the highlighted letter with a space to replicate TurboCAT behavior.
- Tagging changes were made to exported RTFs allowing for better transferability between CAT systems.
- Caseview Output may now, optionally, be indented like the SmartCAT transcript.
- If realtime output fails to start SmartCAT will display a message to that effect and will still start realtime.
- Paragraphs that end in double-quotes no longer receive auto-punctuation.
- Smartword endings no longer remove character attributes (such as:
bold, underline, italics, etc.) of the rootword. They will also retain special status like untranslate or phonetic.
- The <GET> token now uses the standard include code so files included with the <GET> token will bring bookmarks, headers, and index entries, but not notes.
- Multi-headers now default to center justification when there is no previous header.
- When text is selected 'Enter' now opens the text global dialog to better replicate TurboCAT behavior.
- To replicate TurboCAT behavior Escape will now bring up the notes window if nothing is selected and SmartCAT is not in print preview.
- Global Reversing now properly reverses text globals that only encompass part of a translation. In fact, global reversing now properly reverse everything. However, global undo information is now incompatible with versions earlier then 3.0 (SmartCAT can reverse a globals made with
2.4.3 and earlier, but it will only be as accurate as that version).
- Changing 'Para Formatting' will now work whether you select upwards or downwards.
- Realtime Output, Ascii and Copy/Paste now use the symbol you would expect to see printed. So, space rather then ^ and a standard period rather then a smart period.
- Scan to next will now find an unmatched { or [ as per TurboCAT behavior.
- If SmartCAT 3.0 detects that a later version has been run it will display a warning message.
- Spell check now returns the cursor to its original position after completing spell check.
- The 'Index Settings' window has been cleaned up and reorganized for readability and simplicity: The Index column selection is now done by drop-down instead of radio button, and you can now select 'timestamp' as column option; and, Indexes now have the option to show the index title and column headers.
- Swap words ('o') now Caps/Uncaps the appropriate words in conjunction with the beginning of sentences and paragraphs, and also swaps words around punctuation rather the taking punctuation with it.
- Punctuation turbokeys will now work properly when a word is highlighted or whether you select text forward or backward.
- Quote type punctuation, [], {}, (), " and <>, will work properly when SmartCAT is in highlight mode as well as in select mode.
- Hard spaces at the beginning or end of a dictionary entry no longer generate an extra space in the transcript.
- If the settings in the 'Job Properties' are in such a combination as to force text off the right edge of the page, SmartCAT will generate a warning and supply options asking what you would like to do to fix it rather then automatically adjusting the 'Columns/Line'.
- The Job Properties will now update the job whenever a change is made to the text indentation, and will do so without changing auto-punctuation removing the need for the 'Reformat the Job' check box.
- In the 'Editing Prefs' dialog the option 'Show Hard Spaces' has been replaced with 'Show Hard Spaces and Smart Periods' which will display smart periods distinct from normal periods.
- SmartCAT will now exit select mode when it finishes performing a text global that makes changes to the job.
- When spell checking a word ('alt-F9') and the word is spelled correctly the spell check dialog will now display the word in question.
- Punctuation created by splitting paragraphs ('y' or 'ctrl-y') will be set with an auto-punctuation attribute so if the paragraph type is subsequently changed the punctuation will change accordingly.
- Deleting the first letter of a sentence will now cap the new first letter of the sentence.
- A stroke that trans as a parenthetical paragraph, if stroked twice, will no longer cause an errant close paren at the end of the previous paragraph.
- Punctuation keys (.,;:?'<>"[]{}^) have all had a going over to make sure they behave as expected, correctly cap/uncap and space appropriately. When a word followed by a dumb period is highlighted, stroking '.' (period) now removes the dumb period and on a second press inserts a smart period (rather than converting the dumb period to a smart period at the first keypress). Also <>[]{} are all new and behave more-or-less like " or ) with single-key punctuation (.,;:?!) jumping in/out/off correctly.
